Judge Janet Heppard | 387th Family Court
MEET THE JUDGE
Judge Janet Heppard has presided over the 387th Court since January 1, 2021. Her current term ends in 2024.
Judge Heppard graduated from the University of Houston Law Center in 1993 with a joint J.D./M.B.A. The vast majority of her legal career has been dedicated to service. In 1995, she was hired as a staff attorney for the University of Houston Law Center’s clinical program in the area of family law. She then became the Clinic Director in 2008 and a full Clinical Professor in 2019. University of Houston Law Center’s clinical program provides free legal services to low income members of the community, who would likely go without representation without the clinic’s assistance.
She has received numerous awards for her dedication to service, including the “Longevity of Exemplary Service to the Houston Bar Association Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program” Award from the Houston Bar Association and an “Award of Merit” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for her work on Hague Convention cases. In addition to her clinical work, she has taught classes over subjects such as domestic violence and immigration and family law.
She is a wife and a mother to three children. In her free time, she enjoys volunteering with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as an archery instructor. Prior to taking the bench, she enjoyed volunteering with the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program.
